Kiss your content? Like kiss the words on the computer screen do you mean?
Umm…this is awkward, no, no, absolutely not….step away from your laptop, I am not encouraging you to kiss the computer.
Have you ever heard of the acronym ‘KISS ‘?
Keep it simple, stupid. Hang on, let me explain, I’m not calling you stupid!!
KISS is a basic design principle from the Navy of all places and is nearly 70 years old. So whilst its not modern thinking it’s certainly still extremely relevant for us today.
The principle believes that most systems work best if they are kept simple rather than complicated. Remove the un-necessary complexity and content creation is no different.
Don’t get bogged down in the nitty gritty, don’t overcomplicate things. K-I-S-S the drama and unnecessary detail away.
This same principle can be easily applied when you need to write content for your business. So many of my clients get stuck when it comes time to brainstorming content creation, so often I hear ‘I cant think of anything to write”……..”I don’t know what they want to hear”…..It doesn’t have to be that hard.
Anyone can write great content. Yes anyone….even you!! If you put the time and energy required, it’s absolutely possible to create impactful, engaging and entertaining content, whether that be in the form of a blog post, social media content, webinars, speeches, whatever is relevant for your business.
So in the spirit of living K-I-S-S, here are my top 5 tips in delivering rocking content to your audience
1 - Be authentically you
Have you ever heard of a thing called Google? Whilst it’s a phenomenal source of info, it can also be information overload. Nobody wants to hear the same stuff regurgitated over and over again. Your community or followers are reading your content because it’s from YOU. Let you shine out. Use language you would normally use, be true to your set of personal values, be honest, don’t shy away from who you are. Be bold, have fun and enjoy writing from the heart.
2 - Be a relevant story teller
I am a business coach, I am wildly passionate about helping small businesses in their strategy and marketing plans. Sound familiar? I’m sure it does, there are quite possible a gazillion other business coaches out there, inspiring and selling their individual dream. So what makes me unique?
I differentiate myself by leveraging my personal story. My ‘special sauce’ if you like. You need to become a professional storyteller if you want your content to cut through the clutter and hit the mark.
I passionately believe that everyone has a unique story to tell and when delivered in an authentic way, your audience will be asking for more!
3 - Fuel the brain
So yes yes, that is all good and well, but where do the ideas come from? I am a proud life learner, I am naturally curious and I love devouring new thinking. This all contributes to my content. My little brain is forever jam packed with thoughts, new ideas and differing opinions. This ‘stimuli’ if you like, keeps the list of potential ideas long. I have post it notes in various spots around the house that have lists of blog post ideas- call me nuts, but it works!! I never find myself sitting staring at a blank screen, I waste too much time trying to determine what to write this week vs the next!!
4 - Batch it up & Map it out
Get in the flow and stay there baby!! You know that feeling when you find your feet, and the work starts pumping out. Without noticing an hour or two have suddenly evaporated. That is FLOW, finding your groove and taking advantage of you finding the right space to work in. I block out a morning a month to create my content, in those handful of hours, I pump out a month worth of blogs and sometimes up to 50 social media posts.
This is why I believe you should batch your work, when you get in flow, capitalise on that goodness and batch out your work. For those of you reading one of my blogs for the first time, I am a huge fan of planning….I am a planning addict….. “Hello my name is Emily and I am obsessed with forward planning, it’s been 3 days since I populated my last planning matrix” all jokes aside, it’s a brilliant idea to plan your content. This gives you visibility to deadlines, content pillars and ensures your content is relevant and interesting for your community. I have a content matrix that outlines the topic, headline and the 4 main points ill discuss/outline in the blog post.
So when the time comes to write your content, you have a plan of attack in place, a rough structure already mapped out and you are well on your way to getting an awesome job done.
5 - Chat to your audience
Always keep your key target at the centre of your content. It sounds straight forward doesn’t it; however you would be amazed at how often I find myself lost in someone else’s confusing and convoluted blog content online. Long winded, drawn out and to be honest vanilla content. Who has the time to read a billion pages of content? My community want short, sharp, to the point ideas/thoughts/solutions, that will help them grow their business faster.
So how do you know what to write about? Use your ears you beautiful thing! LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN and then listen some more. My community and clients tell me every single day what they need. When they ask a question about how they best use Instagram to market their business- boom…there is a blog post right there. I had a client call me last week ‘I’m lost in Facebook ads…help’ My secret? I quite literally pretend they are sitting there with me and I speak out aloud to them, I try and anticipate their questions, focus on their pain points and in my writing, I over deliver solutions to overcome these hot spots.
6 - Nail your killer headline
The good old 80/20 rule comes in play here. 80% of people will read your headline but only 20% will finish your blog. Depressing huh. You need to hook them in and get your reader engaged from the get-go. Short and punchy
So there you have it, my 6 top tips for creating K-I-S-S Content.
It really is that simple, don’t over think it, believe in yourself and remember you know your subject matter better than anyone else, this coupled with your unique storytelling, enables you to be the expert in your field and deliver compelling content to your community, they deserve it and you are now equipped with the skills and know-how to make it a reality!
I love to hear how you go when putting these thoughts in practice, so I’d love you to drop me an email or come stalk me on social media.
